Description

Also known as ‘coral drops’, the dangling blooms of bessera elegans resemble a necklace of pendant jewels. With their vermilion petals contrasting against a cream interior, the clusters of bell-shaped blooms are displayed above wispy foliage. Carried on fine, wiry stems, the flowers appear to be floating in mid-air, bringing movement and airy lightness to your garden display. Reaching a height of up to 60cm, bessera elegans creates a tropical feel in the middle of a sheltered, sunny border or amongst containers. Flowering from July to October, these fiery blooms offer revitalising colour from late summer into the autumn.

Care Guide

Mexican native Bessera thrives in a warm, sheltered spot in well-drained, fertile soil.

Plant the bulbs 5-10cm deep and 15cm apart once risk of frost has passed in late spring.  Ensure soil is kept consistently damp with regular watering, especially during hot, dry periods.

During July and August, slender stems holding exquisite umbels of tubular scarlet blooms grow to heights of 50-60cm.

Lift the bulbs in late autumn and store in spent compost or wood shavings in the dark, in a frost-free place before re-planting next spring.
