Two new and exclusive top quality, top size bulbs, a Lily and an Iris, have been specially named to mark more than a half-century of service by members of staff. The two bulbs feature in the summer bulb collection of P. de Jager & Sons Limited. The latest collection offers:

•   426 different bulbs, of which 162 are new or reintroductions

•   91 lilies, of which 63 are new or reintroductions

•   56 dahlias, of which 27 are new or reintroductions

Eight glorious Pictorial Meadows Seed Mixtures are set to keep the colour flowing in the nation's gardens. Featuring the carefully blended seed mixes of native and non-native hardy annuals designed to provide high quality and cost effective flowering displays from summer through to late autumn. They will be available to home gardeners, as well as being widely available in the commercial horticultural market.

Developed following several years of intensive trials at the University of Sheffield, the meadows mixtures overcome many of the problems that are often associated with creating meadows from seed, such as unreliable germination, short flowering season, untidy appearance and the need to sow on low-fertility soils. They create sumptuous visual effects and are formulated primarily for their harmonious and impressionistic colour associations, rather than attempting to copy the species compositions of meadows that can be found in the wild.

Historically created to inject drama into large-scale commercial landscapes, they can also create sparkling, complex and intricate pictures in the smallest of gardens. The mixtures can provide a colourful, wildlife-friendly replacement for mown grass; or more formally in beds; or to provide colour between shrubs, trees and perennials; or they can encourage beneficial insects into the fringes of a vegetable plot.

Says de Jager owner, George Clowes, “I saw a Pictorial Meadows mixture in bloom at Chelsea in May on the Leeds City Council Gold Medal arden and thought how wonderful it looked. I just had to make the mixes more readily available to gardeners.”

Staff from Maidstone based de Jager bulbs handed over a cheque for £10,000 to Breast Cancer Campaign's corporate fundraiser, Franklin Jacoyange, earlier this week as a result of de Jager's pink campaign. Premier flower bulb specialists, de Jager, teamed up with the charity, whose aim is to be the leading specialists in breast cancer research in the UK, to raise funds from the sale of a specially branded "Pink Bulb Range".

When de Jager customers bought bulbs from the 'Pink Range', identified by the breast cancer pink ribbon in the catalogue and on its website www.dejager.co.uk, 10% of the sale of those bulbs was raised for the charity.

Additionally a specially designed Pink Bulb Box containing pink flowering bulbs retailing at £30 contributed £2.60 from every box sold to the charity.

de Jager's New and Exclusive Bulbs

A new and exclusive daffodil, Faith, and a new Chilean crocus bulb, Tecophilaea cyanocrocus var. leichtlinii, star in the de Jager Autumn 2010 collection. Faith made its British debut with a stunning display at RHS Wisley in April 2010. 5,000 bulbs, donated by de Jager, bloomed in the canal area in front of the Wisley laboratory prompting garden visitors to ring de Jager to compliment them on the fantastic show. As only a limited number of bulbs were available for Spring 2010 they were only available to members of the Women’s Institute through de Jager’s WI bulb scheme.

Daffodil Faith is an outward facing daffodil, which is bright white with a trumpet shaped glorious pink cup and a rolled rim. It flowers in April at a height of 16 ins and the bulb size is 12-14cm. The Chilean Crocus, Tecophilaea cyanocrocus var. leichtlinii, has petals that are an intense vivid gentian blue with a white throat. Its flowers are 2 inches across when fully open. The bulb has had limited availability in this country but now de Jager is making it more widely available by offering it in the new Autumn Bulb Catalogue.

Says de Jager owner, George Clowes, “We only managed to procure a limited number of the beautiful Faith daffodils last season so we donated some to Wisley and offered some for sale to WI members. The rest we used to increase our stocks for the Autumn 2010 catalogue so that we can now make them available to everyone.”

The new catalogue contains over 620 spring flowering bulbs, including 64 varieties which are either new or re-introductions. de Jager prides itself on sourcing a wide range of interesting and unusual varieties for its customers having only supplied top quality, top size bulb since 1868.

This spring we continued with some exciting developments including spectacular spring flowerbeds in the RHS Garden Wisley and in the Queen Mother's Rose Garden in Hyde Park. Star of hit West End Musical Oliver! Jodie Prenger (Nancy) and three other female cast members took time out of rehearsals today at The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane (Thursday 19 November) to exercise their green fingers and dig in with their pink spades to help Breast Cancer Campaign. They planted a range of pink and white bulbs in the Rose Garden of London's Hyde Park to raise awareness for the charity. The bulbs come courtesy of P. de Jager & Sons, which has pledged its support to Breast Cancer Campaign for a year. As a result there'll be a host of pink and white flowers to admire in the Rose Garden next Spring.

de Jager bulbs premiere on QVC television

de Jager bulbs premiered on QVC television on Saturday 5th September. On the programme three varieties of daffodils were featured and it was great to see how quickly the bulbs sold through. The highlight of the programme was when the presenter showed a plate of de Jager daffodils alongside the same quantity of garden centre daffodils, which very obviously showed how much bigger de Jager bulbs are in size. The QVC measuring equipment showed a huge peak in demand at this point which proves that BIGGER BULBS really are better.

Two more Saturday morning bulb features are scheduled for de Jager this month during Richard Jackson’s gardening hour from 9.00 am to 10.00 am on Saturday 12th and Saturday 26th September.

Gardener of the Year 2009 Competition

de Jager were one of the main sponsors of the Garden News magazine’s legendary Gardener of the Year competition for 2009, which started life in the late 1980s and last run in 2003.

The competition returned with more prizes than ever before and, with 12 varied categories, it gave every gardener a chance to enter, whether they have a small flat with a window box, a patio full of colour or a productive vegetable patch or any size of garden;

Geoff Hodge, who was the gardening editor of Garden News when the competition ran previously, judged the competition

Maurice and Vilma Green were the overall Gardener of the Year winners for 2009. They previously won the tile in 1997. Their garden contains a mix of shade-loving plants such as tree ferns (Dicksonia Antarctica), shrubs and perennials. The couple has gardened for all their married life – 58 years. “We enjoy every day we spend in the garden. It keeps us fit and healthy,” says Vilma. de Jager have sent the couple vouchers so that they can choose lots of bulbs to complement their planting.

Says judge Geoff Hodge, “It was great to see Maurice and Vilma Green again, not only to meet the gardening made couple, which is always a delight, but also to have the privilege of looking around their garden again. “It has been more than 10 years since I last saw the garden and it looked as good as ever. “Some people, pleased with their garden, leave it alone and then suffer the subsequent decline. But not Maurice and Vilma. New areas have been created, things moved around, old, tired plants removed and new ones introduced. Beds of conifers, that had reached their peak performance, had been pruned almost bonsai-like to provide new features. “Their attention to detail is immaculate, their plants’ requirements noted and met and then grown to perfection.”

Breast Cancer Campaign, who aim to be the leading specialists in breast cancer research throughout the UK, has teamed up with premier flower bulb suppliers, P. de Jager & Sons Limited, to raise substantial funds from the sale of a specially branded ‘‘Pink Bulb Range’’. When de Jager customers order from the ‘‘Pink Bulb Range’’ identified by the breast cancer pink ribbon in the catalogue and on its website www.dejager.co.uk, 10% of the sale of those bulbs will go to the charity. Additionally a specially designed ‘‘Pink Bulb Box’’ containing pink flowering bulbs retailing at £30 (inc. VAT) will contribute £2.60 from every box sold to the charity.

The ‘Pink Bulb Range’ identified by the breast cancer pink ribbon and special ‘Pink Bulb Box’ will feature in de Jager’s new spring collection on sale from the end of May 2009.

“We have been looking for a suitable charity to support for some time,” says de Jager owner, George Clowes, “and Breast Cancer Campaign just ticked all our boxes. We are now looking to gardeners who love growing bulbs to adopt a pink theme. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all had pink displays in our flower beds next spring and supported Breast Cancer Campaign?”

Demelza House Set To Bloom With Over 2,500 Bulbs - 14th May 2009

A donation of more than 2,500 gladioli bulbs from bulb company, P. de Jager and Sons Limited, based in East Sutton, is set to have a big floral impact this summer on Demelza House Children's Hospices.

The top quality, top size bulbs were donated to the hospices to be planted in their grounds and to help them to fundraise. The bulbs will be planted in time for a fantastic bloom in the summer to cheer up the grounds of the two Demelza House Children's Hospices in Sittingbourne, Kent and in Eltham, South East London.

"We are about to launch our Autumn 2009 catalogue," says de Jager's owner, George Clowes, "and so when we needed to clear the warehouse of the remaining gladioli bulbs we looked for a worthy cause and Demelza House fitted the bill for us. We hope they will receive many years of enjoyment out of the bulbs."

Says fundraiser Hayley Richardson, "We are always grateful for contributions to help us with our work, whether monetary or in kind, and the bulbs are a fantastic way of brightening up our grounds and we look forward to many years of seeing them bloom."

As a result of frequently asked questions from the public, premier bulb suppliers P. de Jager & Sons in East Sutton, Kent have produced a handy bulb planting guide. The 20 page guide, with wipe clean covers, contains valuable information on the best planting positions for different varieties of bulbs, how deep to plant them, their soil preference and, where appropriate, how to bring them on before planting out.

"De Jager have always included planting information when sending out bulbs and we frequently receive questions on what to do with certain bulbs," says the company's owner George Clowes, "So we thought it would be a good idea to bring all that knowledge and advice together in a bulb planting guide that gardeners can keep to hand. We are always striving to help our customer get the most out of their bulbs and we have had such a good initial response for the guide that we decided to print 200,000."

The bulb planting guide is A6 in size - 6 5/8ths high (17cm) by 4 ¾ inches wide (12cm).

SPRING BULBS DONATED TO HOSPICE SHOPS

Quality bulb supplier, P. de Jager and Sons Limited, based in East Sutton, have generously given The Heart of Kent Hospice £2500 worth of Hyacinth and Tulip bulbs to offer shoppers for a donation to the charity.

The top quality, top size bulbs were donated to the Hospice to help them make the most of fundraising and they will be available in all of the Hospice’s shops up until Christmas.

The bulbs can still be planted for a fantastic bloom in the spring, or are a great idea to pot up to bring some cheer into the house this winter.

Bucking current trends in the gardening industry, sales at P. de Jager & Sons Limited, the premier garden flower bulb wholesale and retail company based in East Sutton, Maidstone, are romping ahead at 43% up on last year and still rising. It is only four months since George and Rose Clowes bought the company and they are delighted with progress so far!

39% of retail sales are from the new website launched in June and 28% of total retail sales are from new customers via the web. The company is also seeing larger orders arriving from existing de Jager customers both wholesale and retail.

De Jager was bought by George and Rose Clowes in May and straightaway a new website was commissioned, the Autumn catalogue was brought together and a marketing plan produced and put into action. The task was to direct as many retail orders as possible to the new website.

“Thelma is taking a well earned retirement but has kindly agreed to remain connected with the company in the richly deserved position of Life President,” said George. “We have exciting plans to develop P. de Jager & Sons, including a new retail website that will go live later this month offering an introductory 10% discount.
