Description

With pillars of densely packed, star-shaped blooms topped by a crown of spiked bracts, Eucomis ‘Comosa’ makes an unusual, striking addition to borders and summer container displays. Alternatively referred to as the ‘Pineapple Flower’, Eucomis will bring a dash of tropical charm to your garden. Each pearly white petal and lush green bract is outlined with a margin of contrasting maroon-purple, enhanced against a backdrop of wavy-edged, arching foliage. The flowers are followed by shiny seedpods which extend interest well into autumn. This variety also makes an extraordinary cut-flower, lasting for weeks in a vase.

Care Guide

For best results, grow Eucomis in pots indoors, in a bright room such as a conservatory, or in a greenhouse.  In mild regions, the Pineapple Flower can also be grown outdoors in the garden in full sun.  A shady position will result in reduced flowering.

Pots can be taken outdoors for the summer months and brought indoors before temperatures drop in autumn.

Plant the bulbs 10cm deep and 20-30cm apart into a container filled with a mix of coarse, well-drained soil.  Provide consistent watering, 2-3 times per week during spring and summer, ensuring the soil remains moderately moist.  Do not allow the bulbs to sit in wet soil over the winter.

Mulch the soil surrounding your Eucomis bulbs or top dress pots in late autumn.
