Description
Lycoris ‘Aurea’ is referred to by a multitude of delightful names – Surprise Lily, Spider Lily, Hurricane Lily, and Naked Lily – all indicating the remarkable appearance of this striking plant. The showy umbels of golden blooms are embellished with exuberant, curling petals and protruding, wispy stamens. Ribbon-like foliage emerges only after the blooms have faded, allowing the flowers to shine unrivalled atop long, bare stems. Perfect for adding pizazz to your autumn display, ‘Aurea’ makes a spectacular addition to patio containers. A member of the Amaryllis family, simply overwinter these tender bulbs indoors or grow in the conservatory all year round.
Care Guide
These half-hardy perennials are best cultivated in containers in a cool greenhouse or conservatory. They can also be started off indoors in pots, away from frost, before transplanting outside in early June.
Plant bulbs between March and May, with their necks exposed from the soil, spaced 20cm apart. A sheltered spot which receives full sun with free-draining soil is ideal.
Provide regular watering after planting and during active growth. During the period of dormancy in winter, do not allow the bulbs to sit in wet soil as this will lead to rotting.
Bring outdoor containers back inside before temperatures drop in autumn as Lycoris are tender plants. Bulbs in the ground will require lifting and storing in a cool dry building over the winter months.
