Amarine

Amarines is an interesting cross between Nerine and Amaryllis, they are one of the stars of the autumn garden flowering in September. Producing up to 10 slender lily-like flowers per leafless stem. Frost hardy and will naturalise in many gardens.

Amarine varieties are happy in both borders and containers, the strap-shaped foliage develops in early summer lasting through to November time.

Zephyranthes

Zephyranthes, from the greek meaning 'Flowers of the West Wind', the crocus-like, cupped blooms are borne on slender stems, surrounded by linear, grassy foliage. Plant in a sunny well-drained position.

Tropaeolum

Tropaeolum is a perennial climber growing to 2 metres in height, with fiery red-orange blooms and velvety small lobed leaves.

Trillium

Trillium is a woodland jewel, thriving in moist shady situations, where they grow luxuriant foliage and produce their beautiful large three-petalled flowers.

Tigridia

Very few flowers are as beautiful or more picturesquely coloured than Tigridia. Often called the Peacock Tiger Flower, they are celebrated bold, exotic blooms that resemble living jewels. Tigridia petals are patterned with dramatic, tiger-like spots surrounding a richly coloured central cup.

Sprekelia

Sprekelia, often known as the Aztec Lily, they are native to Mexico and part of the Amaryllis family. With their fascinating form and brilliant colouring, these tender bulbs make eye-catching additions to summer patio containers, and to greenhouse and conservatory displays.

Scadoxus

Scadoxus also known as Blood Lily, native to tropical east and south Africa. Featuring large spherical flowerheads with lots of tiny starry blooms in fiery colours.

Roscoea

Roscoea are hardy perennial plants of the Ginger family with striking, orchid-like purple flowers that rise above neat clumps of folded green leaves in midsummer. Thrives in rich, moist, well-drained soil in semi-shade.

Rhodohypoxis

Rhodohypoxis are low-growing perennials, grassy tufts of foliage and star-shaped flowers carpet the ground from late spring through summer. Native to the mountain grasslands of South Africa. Rhodohypoxis are ideal for rock gardens, containers and the front of sunny borders.

Polianthes

Polianthes, or tuberose, is a beautifully fragrant plant producing tall spikes of waxy, star-shaped white flowers. Easy to grow, blooming in late summer, Polianthes adds both beauty and perfume to any outdoor space.

Paeonies

Paeonies appeal is unfailing, often said to live for generations and one of the most loved perennials for the garden. Spectacular colourful fragrant flowers in lavish shades and fine clumps of lovely lobed foliage. Paeonies are a timeless favourite.

Nerine

Nerines are dazzling autumn-flowering plants prized for their clusters of starburst blooms and jewel-like colours. Appearing on tall, wiry stems just as many summer plants fade, Nerines thrive in sunny, well-drained positions. Perfect for elegant cut flowers.

Mirabilis

Mirabilis is a perennial with colourful, fragrant flowers in bright shades which stand out against the bushy green foliage. Flowering from July until the first frosts in autumn, the trumpet-shaped blooms open in the late afternoon and evening, often called Four O'Clock Plants.

Dahlias

Dahlias are much prized for cutting and they are very decorative in the garden. de Jager offer over 150 different dahlia varieties in different categories for growing in bedding and pots.

From March onwards top quality field grown tubers will be despatched in polythene bags, in which they may be safely kept until planting time, stored in a cool place. Dahlias thrive in rich soil, and an application of well rotted manure is most beneficial.

Chasmanthe

Chasmanthe are a variety related to the Crocosmia family, producing 20-30 flowers in neat vertical rows on tall stems.

They thrive in moist but well-drained soil and enjoy sun or partial shade, Chasmanthe are hardy which makes them versatile for many gardens. They will reward you with a brilliant display year after year.

Begonias

Begonias are excellent for bedding, window boxes, hanging baskets and containers.  They flower for months on end, providing continuous colour throughout the summer. 

Prized for their vibrant blooms, ornamental foliage, easy to care and can also grow in  partial shade.

Annual & Perennial

These Meadow Mixtures are carefully blended seed mixes of native and non-native hardy annuals designed to provide high quality and cost-effective flowering displays.  They have been developed following several years of intensive trials at the University of Sheffield.  Unlike other mixes that are available, they will flower and provide visual interest over an extremely long period of time (from summer through to late autumn).

They inject drama into large-scale commercial landscapes and create sparkling, complex and intricate pictures in the very smallest of spaces.  They provide a colourful, wildlife-friendly replacement for mown grass; they can be sown formally in beds or to provide colour between shrubs, trees and perennials.  Leeds City Council included a meadow mixture in their magnificent Gold Medal winning garden at the Chelsea Flower Show 2010 and these mixtures have been used extensively in the Olympic Park.

Sow these annual seed mixes at a rate of 2-3g per square metre in the spring – March, April, May - and they will produce superb colour displays within 8 weeks or so of sowing.  Unlike other annual meadow mixtures, these mixtures are formulated to produce a succession of flowering species.

The Perennial seed mixes all contain over 20 species of plants, and should be sown at a rate of 2g per square metre (except Purple Haze – 3g per sq. m.) from early autumn to late spring, with October/November being the best for medium to large scale plantings.  Once established the meadow can be managed simply with an annual cut in late February.

Zantedeschia

Zantedeschia can be planted outdoors preferring full sun and humus-rich moist soil. Grow in pots or containers, but they will need to be moved indoors over winter. These dramatic plants produce impressive, fluted blooms in either bold, vibrant shades or pure white. Also known as Arum lily or calla lily. Aethiopica is the only fully hardy variety.

Triteleia

Triteleia are long lasting early summer flowering bulbs originating from North-West America.  Clusters of papery flowers with up to 25 flowers per stem, rise above grass-like basal leaves.

Ranunculus

Ranunculus are often compared to miniature peonies or roses, they reward gardeners with a long season of colour. The bowl-shaped flowers are packed with plump layers of petals with daintily quilled edges. Ranunculus are perfect for flower arrangements, with long-lasting blooms.

Oxalis

Oxalis is a charming perennial with delicate, clover-like leaves and dainty flowers. These rewarding plants proves highly versatile, thriving in rock gardens, containers, and borders, as well as making an easy-going, ornamental houseplant.

Ornithogalum

Ornithogalum, often called Star of Bethlehem, is a charming group of perennials loved for their star-shaped flowers on long, sturdy stems.

Free flowering bulbs which will grow in warm, sunny spots of the garden in any good well-drained soil.  Ornithogalum are suitable for naturalising in shrubberies, grassy banks or in the border.

Helleborus

Helleborus (Hellebores) are hardy, shade-loving perennials that bloom in late winter and early spring, bringing colour when little else is flowering. Their long-lasting blooms and evergreen foliage stays attractive year-round. Easy to grow, low maintenance, shade or semi-shade  or preferred.

Amaryllis -Outdoor

This wonderful Amaryllis is hardy and selected as it can be grown outdoors, preferring to planted against a warm south wall where they can establish to bloom freely every year. Flowers carry a delicate scent with elegant umbels.

Liatris

Liatris, also known as Gayfeather, is an exotic variety that adds tactile texture to your late summer display. Opening from the top of the stem downwards like a bottlebrush, the tiny starry blooms give these plants a soft, fluffy appearance.

Loved by pollinators, Liatris varieties also makes exceptional cut flowers. Thrives in sunny, well-drained conditions, showing impressive drought tolerance once established.

Ixia

Ixia, often called African Corn Lily, these striking flowers with star-shaped petals make an ideal choice for growing in borders, containers and conservatories. With their attractive grassy foliage, slender wiry stems and brightly coloured blooms, they also are excellent for flower arrangements.

Iris

Iris takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, referring to the wide variety of colours found among the many species. This season we are featuring a selection of Iris that can be planted in the spring. All create a strong visual impact to sunny borders and pots.

Incarvillea

Incarvillea, sometimes called the Hardy Gloxinia, are easy to grow and a wonderful stop-gap in the window between spring bulbs and summer perennials.

Clusters of large trumpet-shaped flowers above attractive fern-like foliage, Incarvillea are excellent to grow in borders but also suited to rockeries and pots.

Hymenocallis

Hymenocallis, known as the Spider Lily, is valued for its elegant, spidery white flowers with a delicate, daffodil-shaped fragrant cup at the centre. Flowering from July to September, plant in warm sunny spots or pots, Hymenocallis is a rare and lovely plant.

Hemerocallis

Hemerocallis, widely known as Day Lilies, are treasured for their vibrant, ever-changing display. Each bloom lasts just a single day, but the plants produce such an abundance of buds that fresh flowers appear continuously for weeks, creating a dynamic show of colour throughout the summer.

Thrives in fertile soil. They are permanent plants, which can remain undisturbed for years, increasing in size and beauty as time goes on, seldom needing attention. Plant in groups amongst shrubs or with other perennials, where summer colour is often lacking.

Hedychium

Hedychium known as the Butterfly Lily belongs to the ginger family, a striking perennial celebrated for its bold foliage. Exquisitely fragrant flowers and tall stems with clusters of delicate, butterfly-like blooms bringing an exotic feel to the garden.

Hardy Gladiolus

Gladioli

Ideal for borders and container displays, Gladioli (Gladiolus) provide both height and long-lasting flowers to brighten summer gardens and make show-stopping bouquets.

Galtonia

Galtonia, also known as the Summer Hyacinth, are handsome and stately flowers that need a warm sunny position. Elegant tall, elegant spires of white, bell-shaped blooms. Flowers from August through to the end of September.

Freesia

While it was formerly only possible to grow Freesias in a greenhouse, through certain preparations (heat-treated corms) they can now be planted outside with great success. 

Freesia plants reward the garden with a beautiful mix of colours and sweet fragrance when planted in borders or containers. Excellent as cut flowers.

Eucomis

Eucomis also known as the Pineapple Flower, creates a touch of exotic warmth to the summer garden. Its upright flower spikes and tufted tops bring quirky elegance to borders and pots, thriving in sunny spots all summer long.

Eucharis

Eucharis, known as the Amazon Lily, is an evergreen South American perennial. Grow indoors or in a greenhouse, they have elegant, year-round foliage and flowers twice a year and through the summer. Highly scented.

Crocosmia

Crocosmia are multi-flowered perennials, we offer both large flowered and small flowered varieties. Known for their arching stems, sword-shaped leaves, crocosmia bring fiery colour to the garden from July to October.

The leaves are long, narrow, and pointed, very similar to iris foliage with fanned display of colour as the flowers progress along the stem.

Cosmos

Cosmos are flowering plants in the daisy family (Asteraceae), best known for their airy, delicate foliage and vibrant, daisy-like blooms that appear in summer. Each variety has a delicious chocolate scent.

They are incredibly popular in gardens because they’re easy to grow, drought-tolerant, and excellent for pollinators.
