Description

An easy-going orchid that you can grow in your garden, Bletilla ‘Striata’ has striking carmine petals and a freckled lip. The exotic-looking blooms are held in racemes of up to 12 flowers, dancing lightly above broad blades of pleated foliage. Native throughout China, Japan, Taiwan, and Vietnam, Bletilla was one of the first orchids to be cultivated in England. This orchid is hardier than most, withstanding down to around -7 degrees, and the RHS have acknowledged its reliable nature with their prestigious Award of Garden Merit. Once established, the pseudo bulbs will gradually spread to form sizeable clumps.

Care Guide

Bletilla are members of the Orchid family, and as such thrive in a warm and bright, well-drained area.  Plant rhizomes 5cm deep, spaced 15cm apart in the soil.

Provide regular watering to maintain soil moisture.

Grass like clumps of foliage produce slender stems of exquisite, scented flowers, rising to graceful heights of 30-40cm in May and June.

Fully hardy and easy to naturalise.

Bletilla will also thrive in shallow containers of loamy soil.
