Achimenes Prima Donna
M5064
Description
Achimenes ‘Prima Donna’ produces a bushy, attractive plant which is smothered in vibrant scarlet-coral flowers over the summer months.
Perfect for showy containers and baskets, this luxurious tender perennial is often grown as a greenhouse specimen, or houseplant. If growing outdoors, protect from frost during the winter months by bringing your pots inside.
The cheerful, funnel-shaped blooms flower from the tips of short stems, bursting open from elongated buds from late spring.
Vigorous and easy-to-grow Achimenes are interesting and rewarding, exotic-looking plants, related to African Violets; a favourite from Victorian times.
Care Guide
Achimenes are low-maintenance perennials, perfect for summer hanging baskets and containers. They are native to Central and South America and are related to African Violets and Gloxinias. For thriving plants, choose a bright, partially shaded location with well-drained soil. Plant tubers 5cm deep and 10cm apart. Ensure soil is consistently moist but not waterlogged and feed with a high potash fertiliser every 10 days during the flowering season (usually May - September). Expect dainty stems to reach 15-30cm in height. Admire a continuous profusion of charming, vibrant blooms, each measuring 3-5cm in diameter, over the summer. Once flowering has finished, remove old growth, lift and overwinter tubers in dry compost in a frost-free place.
