Description
Stop planting displays. Start planting anticipation.
A midsummer border can look full, even impressive, yet still feel oddly forgettable. Yes, everything is visible, the colour is there but nothing changes for weeks and even months. So, you take your border for granted, your eyes drift because your border once in flower loses its impact. Tigridia solves this problem which only professional gardeners are aware of. Not by adding more… by adding timing.
Each flower lasts a single day. Which sounds like a flaw - until you experience the effect. Because nothing fades. Nothing lingers past perfection. Every bloom arrives fresh, flawless, and slightly unexpected. Miss today’s flower? Tomorrow offers another. A border stops being something you have already seen…and becomes something you check each day, almost without thinking, to see what your Tigridia has produced.
FORTY Tigridia 9/+ cm Bulbs across 4 varieties (10 of each), RRP with P&P £34.55. Offer price with 45% discount: £19.00 with FREE postage.
The collection brings four distinct personalities into play.
10 x Alba Grandiflora softens the palette with a white that draws attention quietly, never sharply.
10 x Canariensis settles in with an easy yellow - present, but never demanding.
10 x Lilacea introduces lilac, rare enough to feel quietly special.
10 Speciosa delivers rich red and intricate patterning, best placed where a closer look naturally happens.
Forty Tigridia bulbs do not create one display. They create weeks of endless small discoveries…and of course, there is the decisive advantage of planting de Jager’s larger 9/+ cm bulbs.
No waiting a year to see results. No uncertainty. Plant once, and flowering begins in the first season. Which removes the usual excuse for hesitation.
Planting asks very little. Sun. Drainage. A little water early on. After this your border begins to behave differently. Late summer arrives - the point where many gardens start to feel tired and instead of declining, something new appears. Then something else. A reason to look again.
Most plants try to impress all at once. Tigridia does something far more persuasive. It gives you a reason to come back tomorrow.
Delivered to you mid-April, the perfect time for planting. Choose to grow a border which rewards a second look each and every day.
Care Guide
Semi-hardy Tigridia should ideally be started off indoors, in a greenhouse in spring. Plant the bulbs in pots of multi-purpose compost with added grit at a depth of 7.5 cm below the soil.
Grow undercover for the entire season, or plant out in late spring into a bed of fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Known as Mexican shell flowers, Tigridia look wonderful in groups, providing a colourful summer show.
Provide consistent watering throughout the growing period, ensuring the soil stays moderately moist. Allow the soil to dry out once flowering has finished, before lifting the bulbs in autumn and storing over winter in a frost-free place.
