Description

A beautiful regal dahlia, paeony-flowered ‘Bishop of Canterbury’ is a star of the late-summer border with its velvet magenta-red petals, golden centres and striking almost black foliage.

The semi-double blooms measure 10 cm in diameter with an overall height of 90 cm, they flower for months on end, usually from mid-July onwards and have nectar-rich centres adored by bees, butterflies, and a host of garden pollinators.

The strong, sturdy stems do not require staking which means dahlia ‘Bishop of Canterbury’ is also an excellent choice for long-lasting colour in summer containers.  Interplant with wiry stems such as scabious, verbenas or salvias for added texture and movement.

Dahlias thrive in rich soil, and an application of well rotted manure is most beneficial and these bishop paeony flowered dahlias are idea for pots as well as the border..

de Jager's dahlia top size, top quaility tubers are supplied polythene bags, in which they may be safely kept until planting time, stored in a cool place.

Care Guide

To grow Dahlias, select a sunny spot with well-drained soil, and dig a 30cm deep hole. Plant the tuber 10cm below the soil surface, spacing multiple tubers 45cm apart, or 90cm for taller varieties. Water consistently, maintaining moist but not saturated soil and protect new shoots from slug damage with eco-friendly methods. Feed plants during the blooming period with liquid plant food. Provide support for stems which will reach 60-90cm tall depending on variety. Enjoy spectacular blooms from late summer until first frosts. Cut or deadhead the flowers regularly for a continually flourishing display. Once blooming has finished, cut back foliage before lifting, drying and storing the tubers in peat-free substitute, in a frost-free place until the following spring.
