Otherwise known as the ‘Fireball Lily’, Scadoxus ‘Multiflorus’ puts on a spectacular firework display for shady areas of your garden. Scarlet red, starry blooms culminate in long, golden anthers reminiscent of a sparkler. Each large, spherical flower head is held on a thick, sturdy stem atop lush foliage.
Native to woodland areas of tropical Africa, Scadoxus thrives in moist, well-drained soil in a shaded position. Lift bulbs in the autumn to protect from winter wet and frosts, ready to replant in spring for an even better performance the following season.
Scadoxus ‘Multiflorus’ has been granted an RHS Award of Garden Merit for outstanding, reliable performance.
Scadoxus bulbs are best started off in spring, in a sunny greenhouse in 20cm pots of loam-based compost.
Plant the bulbs with their necks level with the soil surface and water consistently, ensuring soil remains moderately moist but never waterlogged.
Plant outdoors in late spring in an area of indirect sunlight, shaded from the midday sun, preferably in soil which is rich in humus and well-drained. Feed monthly with dilute liquid plant food.
After the flowers have bloomed, allow foliage to die back naturally in autumn and discontinue watering until the following spring.
