Description

Originating from the mountain regions of Mexico and revered by the Aztecs, dahlias proudly wear the crown as the national flower there. Single Flowered Dahlia ‘Mexican Star’ echoes the vibrant spirit of its heritage and will be equally at home in your garden, flowering energetically for months on end.

Blooms of dark chocolate purple-red petals, yellow centre supported by dark stems and bronze-green foliage.

Growing to a height of 100cm, Single Flowered Dahlia 'Mexican Star' proves to be a first choice by many gardeners to grow for glamour throughout mid summer to autumn. It evokes the simplicity of the original single flowered dahlias, but actually is a hybrid cross breeding with Chocolate Cosmos.

de Jager only supplies the highest quality, top size tubers. These single flowered dahlias arrive in polythene bags, in which they may be safely kept until planting time, stored in a cool place.

Care Guide

To grow Dahlias, select a sunny spot with well-drained soil, and dig a 30cm deep hole. Plant the tuber 10cm below the soil surface, spacing multiple tubers 45cm apart, or 90cm for taller varieties. Water consistently, maintaining moist but not saturated soil and protect new shoots from slug damage with eco-friendly methods. Feed plants during the blooming period with liquid plant food. Provide support for stems which will reach 60-90cm tall depending on variety. Enjoy spectacular blooms from late summer until first frosts. Cut or deadhead the flowers regularly for a continually flourishing display. Once blooming has finished, cut back foliage before lifting, drying and storing the tubers in peat-free substitute, in a frost-free place until the following spring.
