Description

With the dramatic, architectural leaves and vibrant, floriferous spires of Hedychium ‘Gardnerianum’, your garden will be transformed into a lush jungle. A member of the ginger family, this spectacular plant boasts a mass of tropical, verdant foliage. Soaring above the leathery leaves, sturdy stems are packed with scented, lemon-yellow blooms, followed by vivid red seedpods. This variety is one of the hardiest Hedychiums for growing in the UK and has been bestowed with an RHS Award of Garden Merit for reliable performance. Given protection from frost, ‘Gardnerianum’ will prove to be a vigorous perennial for your summer display.

Care Guide

This interesting member of the ginger family should be started indoors during March, in a greenhouse or conservatory.

Plant rhizomes shallowly, into pots of multi-purpose compost, allowing the top to sit above the surface of your medium.

Provide consistent watering to ensure soil remains moist.  Ornamental gingers naturally grow on the floor of mountain forests.

Place pots outdoors or plant out in May, into rich well-drained soil in a sunny spot, spacing plants 60cm apart.

Water copiously and feed with liquid manure during the summer months.

Bring pots indoors or lift and store tubers to overwinter.  In warmer regions, a deep mulch of organic matter will provide enough winter protection.
