There is a strong case for you not being sensible with hyacinths. Spread ten bulbs around the garden and you get ten hyacinths. Plant all ten together and you get something else entirely. Apricot Passion and Woodstock

Growing together, the effect is captivating. The soft apricot-pink hyacinth glows beside the deep wine-purple. Each colour makes the other look richer: the pale blooms become softer and warmer, while the purple suddenly looks darker and more sumptuous. From a distance, the contrast catches your eye. Up close, the perfume takes over.

And size matters here. A hyacinth bulb arrives with next spring packed inside. Bigger bulbs carry the reserves needed for the substantial, densely packed flower spikes gardeners, like you, buy hyacinths for in the first place.
