Tulip Species Saxatillis
T1008
Description
With delicate, Easter-egg colours of pale lilac centring around a soft, butter yellow base, ‘Saxatilis’ makes an early appearance to welcome warmer spring days. Misty mauve petals exhibit a silvery, sparkling sheen against a handsome backdrop of glossy, dark green leaves.
Found growing in great swathes on the rocky hillsides of the Aegean Islands, these botanical tulips make an excellent choice for naturalising on well-drained soil amongst borders and lawns. Their compact habit also makes them ideal for rockeries and containers. The RHS has granted ‘Saxatilis’ with an Award of Garden Merit’, so you can be sure it will thrive in your garden.
Care Guide
November is the optimum month for planting Tulip bulbs. The cooler late-autumn temperatures help to keep disease at bay, whilst still allowing time for your bulbs to put roots down before spring. Any well-drained, fertile soil is perfect for Tulips, ideally in full sun or part shade. Plant the bulbs 10-20cm deep, spaced 10-20cm apart. A piece of chicken wire or mesh can be placed on top of the soil or pots after planting if squirrels or rodents are a problem in your area. After flowering in March to May, remove withered stems, foliage and any fallen petals to promote good plant health and apply a top dressing of high-potash fertiliser in late winter.
