The canary-coloured flowers of Fosteriana Tulip ‘Yellow Purissima’ welcome the arrival of spring sunshine. The cheerful blooms seem to glow with the warmth of the sun’s rays, wonderful for lighting up your garden even when the skies are grey. A sport of the much admired ‘Purissima’, this golden variety features the same remarkably large flower heads and sturdy stems, with the added benefit of vibrant colour.
As a Fosteriana, you can expect tulip ‘Yellow Purissima’ to return reliably as the years go by. These tulips beam joyfully in borders and containers for a long-lasting, uplifting display.
October to November are the optimum months for planting Tulip bulbs. The cooler late-autumn temperatures help to keep disease at bay, whilst still allowing time for your bulbs to put roots down before spring.
Any well-drained, fertile soil is perfect for Tulips, ideally in full sun or part shade. Plant the bulbs 10-20 cm deep, spaced 10-20 cm apart. A piece of chicken wire or mesh can be placed on top of the soil or pots after planting if squirrels or rodents are a problem in your area.
After flowering in March to May, remove withered stems, foliage and any fallen petals to promote good plant health and apply a top dressing of high-potash fertiliser in late winter.
