With beguiling blooms of satin, dusky rose washed with an iridescent silver lustre, Mid Season Tulip ‘Mistress’ is a ravishing tulip to bring a touch of romance to your garden. The single blooms allow the spring sunlight to play amongst the petals, shining through the delicate layers to create lustrous colour and depth.
The multi-dimensional colouration of this Triumph variety harmonises beautifully with a wide range of palettes, shimmering amongst borders and container displays. Large, enduring flower heads are supported by tall, strong stems, proving tulip ‘Mistress’ weather-resistant in the garden, and graceful in the vase.
October to November are the optimum months for planting Tulip bulbs. The cooler late-autumn temperatures help to keep disease at bay, whilst still allowing time for your bulbs to put roots down before spring.
Any well-drained, fertile soil is perfect for Tulips, ideally in full sun or part shade. Plant the bulbs 10-20 cm deep, spaced 10-20 cm apart. A piece of chicken wire or mesh can be placed on top of the soil or pots after planting if squirrels or rodents are a problem in your area.
After flowering in March to May, remove withered stems, foliage and any fallen petals to promote good plant health and apply a top dressing of high-potash fertiliser in late winter.
