Hippeastrum ‘Apple Blossom’ produces huge trumpet-shaped flowers, with white petals brushed and feathered with pink around a fresh green throat. The name comes from its resemblance to the colours of spring blossom. Apple Blossom, however, has no intention of waiting until spring. First comes the growth. Then the stem. Then the buds. Until one day those buds begin to open and you discover what a bulb more than a foot around has been storing up for you.

Pot your ‘Apple Blossom’ bulb soon after arrival, give it warmth and light, and flowering usually follows in around six to eight weeks. Some bulbs can take up to ten weeks, so nature gets the final say on the precise date. Meanwhile, you get something you miss when buying a plant already in flower. The anticipation. There is an appealing imbalance in growing ‘Apple Blossom’. The result looks disproportionate to the effort involved. The stunning large flowers suggest you must have done considerably more than putting one bulb in a pot.
