Description

Discovered growing in breath-taking swathes on the mountains of Crete, ‘Lilac Wonder’ is a sensational Species tulip. Misty lavender petals spread out to form a bowl-shaped star, disclosing a clearly demarcated, bold yellow heart. The perky, playful, diminutive blooms dance above ribbons of glossy foliage. This sun-loving variety is well suited to adorning rock gardens, filling gaps at the front of borders, dotting amongst the lawn, and packing into pots. A superb variety for naturalising, providing carpets of colour year after year, ‘Lilac Wonder’ has received an RHS Award of Garden Merit for dependability and exceptional garden performance.

Care Guide

November is the optimum month for planting Tulip bulbs. The cooler late-autumn temperatures help to keep disease at bay, whilst still allowing time for your bulbs to put roots down before spring. Any well-drained, fertile soil is perfect for Tulips, ideally in full sun or part shade. Plant the bulbs 10-20cm deep, spaced 10-20cm apart. A piece of chicken wire or mesh can be placed on top of the soil or pots after planting if squirrels or rodents are a problem in your area. After flowering in March to May, remove withered stems, foliage and any fallen petals to promote good plant health and apply a top dressing of high-potash fertiliser in late winter.
