Making its dramatic appearance in mid-spring, Mid Season ‘Gavota’ is a splendid Triumph tulip with striking colouration and sophisticated form. Emblazoned with a broad belt of maroon-purple, each bloom is framed by a contrasting border of sulphur yellow. The elongated flowers culminate in tapered petals which point outwards, welcoming the spring sunshine with open arms.
This distinctive variety is especially effective when planted against a brick wall and in terracotta pots to emphasize the warm, conker-coloured tones. Prized for its weather-resistance, reliability, and long-lasting blooms, tulip ‘Gavota’ has deservedly been granted an RHS Award of Garden Merit.
October to November are the optimum months for planting Tulip bulbs. The cooler late-autumn temperatures help to keep disease at bay, whilst still allowing time for your bulbs to put roots down before spring.
Any well-drained, fertile soil is perfect for Tulips, ideally in full sun or part shade. Plant the bulbs 10-20 cm deep, spaced 10-20 cm apart. A piece of chicken wire or mesh can be placed on top of the soil or pots after planting if squirrels or rodents are a problem in your area.
After flowering in March to May, remove withered stems, foliage and any fallen petals to promote good plant health and apply a top dressing of high-potash fertiliser in late winter.
