Description

This unusual Crocus speciosus Semedo puts on a show-stopping display in the autumn garden, when its violet-blue, cup-shaped flowers bloom, with a distinct silver sheen on the petal exteriors and dark tinged stems.

Details which must be seen up close to be appreciated and which allow the stamens to pop.

Scatter the bulbs to flower in colourful, naturalistic drifts through grass or garden borders, adding interest to the autumn garden when all else if often starting to fade.

Crocus speciosus Semedo will naturalise beautifully in rich, well-drained soil in full sun.

Care Guide

The autumn-flowering species should be planted in August and September- the earlier the planting the better the result. Corms should be planted about 8 cm deep in any good fertile garden soil.

For the best results, plant 8-10 cm deep, 5 cm apart, and leave undisturbed. Croci are suitable for a pot or bowl culture, and may also be grown in pebbles and water. It is important to remember that they must not be forced too hard, as too much heat or dryness in the atmosphere will lead to excess of leaf and no flower.
