With satiny, cerise petals fading towards a silvery, feathered edge, ‘Christmas Dream’ will have you tickled pink. Strikingly beautiful blooms add a pop of luscious, rich colour to borders and pots early in the season.
The large, egg-shaped flower heads are supported by sturdy stems, making this tulip an excellent, robust garden plant, standing strong even in exposed positions. ‘Christmas Dream’ is also a superb variety for forcing – hence the name – the bulbs can be encouraged to bloom indoors in time for festive celebrations.
November is the optimum month for planting Tulip bulbs. The cooler late-autumn temperatures help to keep disease at bay, whilst still allowing time for your bulbs to put roots down before spring.
Any well-drained, fertile soil is perfect for Tulips, ideally in full sun or part shade.
Plant the bulbs 10-20cm deep, spaced 10-20cm apart. A piece of chicken wire or mesh can be placed on top of the soil or pots after planting if squirrels or rodents are a problem in your area.
After flowering in March to May, remove withered stems, foliage and any fallen petals to promote good plant health and apply a top dressing of high-potash fertiliser in late winter.
